Finishing the premises is an important stage in the final stage of the repair. One of the key steps that gives the flooring a finished neat look is the installation of MDF skirting board. This building material continues to gain popularity among consumers every year. It occupies a leading position in the market due to a number of unique positive qualities and features.

Why is MDF skirting board so popular

This subtle, but significant detail in the interior is made from a wide variety of materials – wood, plastic, duropolymer, etc. Despite the rich choice, MDF baseboard remains the most popular among consumers. These products are made from fine-grained wood fibers mixed with resins and treated with steam under pressure.

Due to the unique technical characteristics, the MDF plinth has not only a convenient design for easy installation, but also a number of other advantages, including:

    • Attractive appearance. On the market there is a selection of these decorative elements in classic white, primed and prepared for painting. Thanks to this, you can easily realize any creative idea in the design of the room, in accordance with the interior design and type of flooring.
    • Flexibility. MDF floor plinth has good elasticity, so its installation is possible even on an uneven surface. However, during the installation of the product on the wall, it is not recommended to apply significant efforts, since the material has a low resistance to fracture and may break.
    • Moisture resistance. This element of decor can be installed in rooms with a high level of humidity. Factory post-painting provides good water protection for years to come. However, the installation of MDF skirting boards is not recommended in bathrooms and toilets. The material can be deformed with regular direct contact with water. For these purposes, an aluminum plinth is perfect.
    • Environmental friendliness. These products are made from natural materials, which makes them 100% environmentally friendly for human health. The main thing is to buy this element of interior design from a trusted manufacturer with an impeccable reputation in the market. This is because many brands offering a lower price for similar products can use phenol-formaldehyde resins as a cheap binder that is toxic.

There are several types of these products, which differ from each other in the material from which they are made.

Skirting PVC or MDF

Models made of polyvinyl chloride have been familiar to the consumer for more than a decade. They have good technical characteristics, are easy to install and have a very attractive price. However, due to the wide variety of materials on the market, the question remains – which skirting board is better, MDF or PVC?

The answer to it can be found in comparing the advantages of two types of these products:

    • Easy to install. Installation of MDF baseboard is possible in several variations – on glue, clips and self-tapping screws (on an aluminum profile). PVC products are attached to the wall only in a rigid way (using building brackets, nails and screws). In the case of the latter material, special elements for corner joints are also required.
    • Reliability. PVC models are more durable in rooms with high levels of humidity, however, their durability is questionable. In living rooms and office centers, the installation of MDF skirting boards is relevant, as it has increased strength. Accidental physical contact, such as with a vacuum cleaner or cart wheels, will not affect its appearance in any way. At the same time, a visible dent may remain on the PVC.
    • Personalization. When it comes to the variety of colors to choose from, it is impossible to immediately say whether MDF or PVC skirting boards are better. They quite successfully imitate wood and other materials. Models made of PVC are offered exclusively in specific shades, while variations made of pressed wood chips are often produced for painting. This greatly increases the scope of their application and allows you to personalize the product for any interior design.
    • Flooring. Installation of MDF skirting boards is an impeccable option for a wooden floor. Many styling options make it easy to choose the best design for a particular wood flooring. PVC products are more relevant for installation with linoleum and carpet.

Skirting board duropolymer or MDF

Foamed polystyrene products still do not lose their relevance, especially in the field of interior decoration. Therefore, it is quite difficult for the buyer to determine which skirting board is better, duropolymer or MDF. Each of the materials has its own advantages and disadvantages.

To understand which skirting board is better, MDF or duropolymer, it is enough to compare the following criteria:

    • Density. Expanded polystyrene planks boast performance of 350-420 kg/m. cube At the same time, wood decor elements have a density of 600-800 kg/m. cube Consequently, the second option has a much greater strength, which has a positive effect on its performance.
    • Appearance. In this case, MDF plinth or duropolymer do not have significant differences. Both options are offered in a wide variety of models in different heights, thicknesses and shapes. However, duropolymer needs to be finished even if you want to keep the original factory color. Do I need to paint the white MDF baseboard? Not necessary as the product is already primed and painted and therefore ready for installation.
    • Durability. Duropolymer plinth or MDF serve approximately the same period. All thanks to the high density and strength of materials. However, the first material often crumbles under mechanical stress, such as impact. Looking at the future, when choosing a duropolymer or MDF, it is better to give preference to the second option.

MDF baseboard or plastic

Polyurethane floor covering products have been on the market for a long time. Therefore, the question of which plinth is better, MDF or plastic, is much easier to figure out. It is enough to compare the following parameters:

    • Durability. Plastic is significantly inferior in impact resistance to fiberboard. It is less resistant to even minor mechanical damage. If you do not know which plinth is better to choose, MDF or polyurethane, it is recommended to give preference to the first material because of its reliability.
    • Aesthetic appeal. Appearance is an important criterion for the selection of these products. To understand what to choose, a polyurethane or MDF skirting board, it is enough to compare the aesthetic appeal of the models. Pressed wood options look more natural and stylish.
    • Price. In terms of cost, it is not difficult to choose an MDF or polyurethane skirting board. Plastic models are significantly cheaper. But the low price entails a number of disadvantages, some of which are listed above. Therefore, what to choose in the end, whether the plinth is plastic or MDF, the decision remains purely individual. If the budget allows, it is better to give preference to more reliable material.

Installation of MDF baseboard

Installation of these products can be attributed to the average level of complexity. MDF plinth, the installation of which has several options, allows you to realize any creative idea. Therefore, products made from this material are widely used in interior design. It remains only to decide how to fix the MDF plinth.

There are 3 installation types in total, which we will discuss in more detail below.

Installation of MDF plinth on liquid nails

This is one of the easiest installation methods. Unlike fasteners, liquid nails provide a secure hold without damaging the surface or leaving marks. It should be understood that gluing the MDF skirting board is carried out exclusively on a flat wall. Otherwise, it will not be possible to achieve a snug fit of the material, which may adversely affect the appearance and further operation of the product.

    • Installation of MDF plinth on glue is carried out according to the following algorithm:
    • surface preparation;
    • measurement and marking;
    • preparation and application of glue;
    • installation and fixation of the MDF skirting board at the correct height until the liquid nails dry;
    • filling of seams.

Installation of MDF skirting board on clips

mdf skirting board on clips

Special clamps greatly simplify the process of installing these products. Installation of MDF plinth on clips takes less time than on liquid nails, as it does not require waiting for the glue to harden. Moreover, this method of fastening allows you to remove a certain segment of the product at any time if necessary and easily install it back.

How to fix the MDF skirting board with clips? It is recommended to act according to the following algorithm:

    • Surface preparation – cleaning and leveling the walls (using a primer or putty).
    • Measurement and marking – the required length of the material is determined, cutting and sawing of the MDF baseboard is carried out.
    • Selection and installation of clips — clips are selected according to the size (depending on the width of the product), mounted on the wall using self-tapping screws or dowels at a distance of 40-50 cm from each other.
    • Installation of MDF plinth on clips – the product is inserted into the clips.
    • Adjustment – you need to make sure that the MDF plinth, which is mounted on clips, is located at the same level along the entire length.
    • Fixation and filling of seams – the product is pressed tightly against the wall and snaps into place. Installing an MDF skirting board on clips involves filling the seams between the material and the wall. You can use sealant.

Installation of MDF plinth on self-tapping screws

This method can also be attributed to one of the simplest. Mounting the MDF skirting board on self-tapping screws takes a little time and ensures reliable fixation of the product. For aesthetic beauty, all places for screwing screws are smeared, primed and painted.

Also, the installation of the MDF skirting board with self-tapping screws can be carried out on a pre-installed bar. This method is relevant, for example, for uneven surfaces or recesses in the wall. Laying MDF plinth without a plank will not be less reliable due to the high strength of the material. The main thing is to make sure that the product fits perfectly exactly on one level.

How to install MDF skirting board on uneven walls

Mounting these products on curved surfaces can be challenging. However, with proper preparation and following all the recommendations, you can install the MDF skirting board on uneven walls with high quality. This does not require specialized knowledge and skills.

To understand how to fix an MDF plinth to an uneven wall, it is enough to think over the algorithm of actions. It is recommended to divide the work into the following stages:

mdf skirting board in the room
    • Surface preparation – leveling strong recesses and protrusions, measuring length, marking installation sites.
    • The choice of fasteners – fastening MDF baseboard to an uneven wall is recommended to be done using special clips or self-tapping screws. Liquid nails are not relevant in this case, as they require a perfectly smooth surface.
    • Installation, adjustment and fixation – the final stage. The product is installed on the surface, corrected and moved to the desired position if necessary, finally fixed with clips or self-tapping screws.

Mounting the MDF skirting board to an uneven wall is accompanied by the final processing of visible seams and gaps. To do this, you can use a special paste or acrylic sealant.
